4.      Highlight the roles of teacher

5.      Explain the concept of educational technology.

6.      State what educational technology entails

7.      State the difference between Technology in Education and Technology in education

What is instruction?

Ø  It is the act of giving a concept opinion to bring about skill.

Ø  It is the act of imparting knowledge.

Ø  It is a way to help learners to acquire experience

Ø  Instruction encompasses teaching and learning.

Ø  Though instruction is not only about desired outcomes it should centre on how to achieve them.

Ø  Instruction could be defined as the purposeful direction of the learning process, it involves major class activities along with planning and management

Preface to Principles of Instruction

u  An instructor must understand the concepts and principles upon which instruction can take place.

u  . Though as a beginner it is expected that you should not only learn approaches from different designers.

u  It is also important for you to learn the principles required because this will enable you to devise or develop your method or model

u  Another fact that you should realise is that the ability to understand the principles would arouse your inquisitiveness, which will make you start asking questions like:

u  "Why is this being done?" and "Why is this being done now? “

u  This will help you to modify and acquire your competency

u  Whatever principles are used it should not be teacher direction but student-teacher interaction.

u  Note that a good teacher should always place students as a priority for instruction so students are taken to a level that at the end of the day acquire the desired learning outcome.

u  Then, what are the principles of instruction?

Principles of Instruction

  1. Personally rehearse and practice what is to be presented to students about the new topic or concept
  2. Start the lesson by helping students to recall the previous topic taught.
  3. Give a short review of the previous lesson
  4. In introducing the new topic to students link it to the previous lesson using the relevant resources
  5. Provide guidance, and encourage regular contact and interaction with learners
  6. Encourage independent Self-regulating Practice
  7. Make samples available by providing scaffolds for challenging tasks
  8. Assist and lead them to come out with their best ability
  9. Look out for student level of assimilation
  10. Allow regular feedback and give room for adjustments

Who is a teacher?

u  A teacher is a word that designates a person who teaches and gives knowledge about various things including education, behaviour transformation, and general knowledge.

u  A teacher or school teacher is a person who provides education for pupils and students.

u  A teacher is a person who helps others to acquire knowledge, skills, competencies or values.

u  A Teacher is a designation for the office, position, and profession for someone who devotes himself to the field of education through patterned educational interaction, formal and informal

Roles of a teacher in the formal school setting

u  The role of a teacher is often formal in the formal school setting and carried out at a school or other place of formal education.

A teacher has the responsibility of explaining and demonstrating concepts in a variety of ways for a variety of different learners utilising different learning styles.

u  A teacher is also a learner, he or she learns how his or her student(s) learn and modifies their teaching accordingly.

u  A teacher is expected to possess skills and should be deeply rooted in certain subject areas of knowledge.

u  A teacher should make clearer presentations and recognize students' difficulties enthusiastically.

u  A teacher should always be ready to handle the queries of their students effectively.

Definitions of Educational Technology

u  Educational technology can be considered either as a design science or as a collection of different research interests addressing fundamental issues of learning, teaching and social organisation.

u  Educational technology is the study and ethical practice of facilitating learning and improving performance by creating, using and managing appropriate technological processes and resources.

u  Educational technology is sometimes also known as instructional technology or learning technology.

u  Educational technology is the use of technology to improve education.

u  It is a systematic, interactive process for designing instruction or training used to improve performance.

What Educational Technologies Entails

u  It can facilitate learning and improve performance via the usage and management of appropriate technological resources.

u  It covers an integrated process that involves people, procedures, ideas, devices, and organization in analysing and analysing problems.

u  It is about organised method that consists of devising, implementing, evaluating and providing solutions to problems.

  11. These concepts are complementary, not oppositional. Technology in education provides the raw materials — powerful, accessible tools that can democratize access, enable scalability (e.g., MOOCs, AI tutors), and make learning more engaging and personalized. However, without the framework of technology of education, it often leads to superficial adoption: flashy gadgets that don't meaningfully improve outcomes, exacerbate inequalities, or distract from core pedagogy.
The real power lies in the of approach: using evidence-based design to integrate tools thoughtfully. For instance, AI can deliver adaptive practice (hardware/software), but only rigorous instructional design ensures it aligns with how humans learn, mitigates biases, and fosters deep understanding rather than rote memorization. In an era of rapid AI and digital transformation, over-focusing on "in" risks technosolutionism — assuming more screens equal better education. Prioritizing "of" encourages critical questions: Does this tool enhance equity, retention, creativity, and human connection? How do we measure success beyond engagement metrics?
Ultimately, effective education leverages both: tools amplified by smart systems. This leads to more efficient, inclusive, and human-centered learning. Educators and policymakers should invest in training that builds both familiarity with tools and expertise in systematic design. The goal isn't technology for its own sake, but better learning outcomes for all.

  12. Here are my views on the distinction between Technology of Education and Technology in Education, building on the lecture and the thoughtful student comments shared.

    ---

    The Core Distinction

Technology of Education Technology in Education
"The science" — systematic application of learning theories, instructional design, and pedagogical methods "The tools" — physical devices, software, and digital infrastructure used in classrooms
Process-oriented: How we teach and learn Product-oriented: What we use to teach and learn
Human-centered design: Focuses on cognition, motivation, and learning outcomes Tool-centered implementation: Focuses on access, functionality, and integration
Examples: Bloom's taxonomy, scaffolding strategies, formative assessment frameworks, adaptive learning algorithms Examples: projectors, LMS platforms, AI tutors, VR headsets, tablets

    ---

    Why the Distinction Matters

    1. Without "Technology of Education," "Technology in Education" is hollow.

Buying the latest smartboards or deploying AI chatbots means little if teachers lack training in how humans actually learn. A school can be saturated with devices yet see zero improvement in outcomes — what one commenter called "superficial adoption: flashy gadgets that don't meaningfully improve outcomes."

    2. Without "Technology in Education," "Technology of Education" is limited.

The best instructional design in the world cannot scale without tools. A brilliantly crafted lesson plan reaches 30 students in a classroom; the same plan embedded in a well-designed MOOC can reach 30,000 globally. Tools democratize access.

    3. They are complementary, not competitive.

The most impactful educational innovations occur at their intersection:
    - Adaptive learning platforms ("in") that apply spaced repetition and mastery-based progression ("of")
    - AI tutors ("in") grounded in cognitive load theory and personalized scaffolding ("of")
    - Virtual labs ("in") designed around constructivist, inquiry-based pedagogy ("of")

    ---

    A Critical Perspective: Avoiding Technosolutionism

As one student insightfully noted, over-focusing on "technology in" risks technosolutionism — the assumption that more screens, more apps, or more data automatically equals better education. This mindset often:
    - Exacerbates inequalities (the "digital divide" is real)
    - Prioritizes engagement metrics over deep learning
    - Distracts from core pedagogy

Conversely, prioritizing "technology of" forces harder, more important questions:
    - Does this tool enhance equity, not just access?
    - Does it foster creativity and critical thinking, or just efficient memorization?
    - How do we measure success beyond clicks and time-on-task?

    ---

My View: The "Of" Must Lead, the "In" Must Serve

Technology of education should be the compass; technology in education should be the vehicle.

In an era of rapid AI and digital transformation, the danger is not that we lack powerful tools — it is that we deploy them without pedagogical intention. Effective education requires:

    1. Instructional designers who understand learning science ("of")
    2. Educators who can critically evaluate and integrate tools ("in")
    3. Policymakers who invest in both infrastructure and teacher training in systematic design

The goal is never technology for its own sake. It is better learning outcomes for all learners — achieved when evidence-based process meets thoughtfully deployed product.

  13. Technology has become an essential part of the educational system because it improves the teaching and learning process. However, the concepts technology of education and technology in education are often confused, even though they have different meanings. While both contribute to effective education, they differ in their focus and application.

Technology of education refers to the systematic application of educational theories, principles, methods, and scientific knowledge to improve teaching and learning. It focuses on the planning, design, implementation, and evaluation of instructional activities to achieve educational objectives. It is concerned with how teaching should be organized to make learning more effective, efficient, and meaningful. It draws from disciplines such as educational psychology, communication, curriculum development, and instructional design.

On the other hand, technology in education refers to the use of technological devices and equipment to facilitate teaching and learning. It involves the application of engineering products such as computers, projectors, televisions, videos, tablets, smartphones, interactive whiteboards, and the internet in the classroom. These tools help teachers present lessons more effectively, increase students' interest, and make learning more interactive.
The major difference between the two concepts is that technology of education focuses on the instructional process, while technology in education focuses on the technological tools used during instruction. Technology of education is broader because it includes the planning and management of the entire teaching-learning process, whereas technology in education is limited to the use of technological equipment to support teaching.

In conclusion, technology of education and technology in education are closely related but different concepts. Technology of education deals with the scientific and systematic approach to teaching and learning, while technology in education emphasizes the use of technological devices in the classroom. Therefore, technology in education can be regarded as a part of technology of education since technological tools are used within the broader framework of instructional planning and delivery.

  14. Technology IN education is faster delivery.
Technology OF education is smarter delivery.

Nigeria currently focuses heavily on the "IN" (laptops in schools, e-learning portals) but mostly ignores the "OF" (adaptive learning, competency-based progression).

The result? We have shiny tools but still produce graduates who can't solve practical problems—exactly what Solarin warned about.

The ideal: Use technology OF education to design a system that makes every child learn at their own pace, then use technology IN education to execute that design affordably at scale.

  30. Technology of education and technology in education are related concepts, but they are different in meaning and application.
Technology of education refers to the systematic and scientific process of designing, implementing, and evaluating the entire teaching and learning process. It focuses on methods, strategies, objectives, and psychological principles that improve learning. In this sense, technology is seen as an approach to education. It involves careful planning of instructional activities, curriculum development, classroom management, and assessment techniques to make learning more effective. The emphasis is on the process of education rather than only on machines or devices.
On the other hand, technology in education refers to the use of technological tools and equipment to support teaching and learning. It includes the use of computers, projectors, televisions, smartphones, the internet, educational software, and multimedia resources in the classroom. Here, technology is used as an aid or instrument to facilitate instruction and make lessons more interesting, interactive, and accessible.
In my view, the major difference lies in their scope and focus. Technology of education is broader because it covers the complete system of teaching and learning, including instructional methods and educational planning. Technology in education is narrower because it mainly deals with the application of technological devices and media in educational settings.
Another difference is that technology of education is based on educational theories and research, while technology in education is more concerned with practical tools and equipment. For example, a teacher using group discussion, programmed instruction, or behaviorist learning principles is applying technology of education. However, a teacher using a laptop, projector, or online learning platform is applying technology in education.
Despite these differences, both concepts are important and complementary. Effective education in the modern world requires sound teaching methods as well as appropriate technological tools. When combined properly, they help improve learning outcomes, increase student participation, and make education more efficient and meaningful.

  31. Difference between Technology of education and Technology in education

    Technology of Education

Technology of education is a science and systematic process of teaching/learning

It is the principles, methods, and theories we use to make learning happen efficiently. It’s “how we design instruction.”

    Examples:
    - ADDIE model, Dick & Carey model
    - Behavioral objectives, programmed instruction

  33. My Views on the Differences Between Technology of Education and Technology in Education
Technology in Education refers to the application of modern tools, devices, and resources to support and enhance the teaching-learning process. It focuses on “hardware” and digital aids such as computers, projectors, internet, educational software, smartboards, online platforms, and multimedia. Its main concern is using technology as a medium or tool to deliver content more effectively, increase engagement, and provide access to information.
Technology of Education, on the other hand, is broader and more fundamental. It refers to the systematic, scientific, and organized application of knowledge, principles, and techniques to the entire educational process. This includes instructional design, teaching methodologies, systems approach, curriculum development, evaluation techniques, and psychological principles of learning. It is essentially the “science of education” – focusing on how education should be structured, delivered, and improved for optimal results, regardless of whether physical tools are used.
In my view, while technology in education is a subset that deals with gadgets and digital integration, technology of education is the foundational framework that guides the effective and purposeful use of any tool (including technology). The former risks becoming mere gadgetry without the latter, which ensures meaningful, learner-centered outcomes. Both are important, but technology of education should lead so that technology in education serves genuine educational goals rather than becoming an end in itself.
