What is Education?  The word education is derived from the Latin word “educare” meaning to train or to mould, and "educere," meaning to lead out.  To philosophers, Education means the bringing out of the ideas of universal validity which are latent in the mind of every man."  Education is the capacity to feel pleasure and pain at the right moment.  Education is a gradual process which brings positive changes in human life and behaviour. In summary, education is the main thing that encourages us to distinguish between right and wrong because in the absence of education, we can’t do what we need or we can’t achieve our goals. Education is a multifaceted concept that encompasses the process of acquiring knowledge, skills, values, beliefs, and attitudes through formal instruction, informal learning experiences, and interactions with one's environment. It is a lifelong journey of intellectual, personal, and social development that empowers individuals to understand the world, navigate complex challenges, and realise their potential. It is a dynamic and transformative process that empowers individuals, enriches communities, and shapes societies. It encompasses formal, informal, and non-formal learning experiences aimed at achieving specific learning outcomes and promoting holistic development, socialisation, citizenship, equity, and inclusion. Education is essential for fostering a lifelong love of learning, realising human potential, and building a more just, sustainable, and prosperous world. Definition of Learning • Learning is a biochemical activity in the brain's information processing, i.e., how the brain converts information to knowledge. • Learning is a conjecture based on some performance of the organism resulting in a continuous manifestation of a level of character transformation that has occurred due to experience. • Learning is a relatively permanent change in behavioural potentiality that occurs due to reinforced practice. Education to instruct the hearts and the minds of children driven by the local community therefore this calls for social inclusion, especially in an environment where there is extreme inequality. (Hengehann, 1982, Mukherjee, 2020). • In a nutshell, learning is a relatively permanent change in behaviour due to experience. (Myers, D.G. 1993). • It involves the ability of learners to remember and recall information accordingly. Learning is a complex and dynamic process through which individuals acquire knowledge, skills, behaviours, and attitudes, leading to changes in their understanding, capabilities, and behaviours. It involves active engagement, cognitive processing, and meaningful interactions with one's environment, experiences, and social context. In Overall, learning is a fundamental aspect of human development and adaptation that enables individuals to acquire knowledge, skills, and competencies, navigate their environment, and achieve their full potential. It is a dynamic and multifaceted process that involves active engagement, meaningful interaction, construction of knowledge, and adaptation to changing circumstances. By understanding the concept of learning, educators, policymakers, and individuals can promote effective learning experiences, foster lifelong learning attitudes, and support continuous growth and development. Relevance of Learning to Human Development Learning is highly relevant to human development as it plays a fundamental role in shaping individuals' cognitive, emotional, social, and behavioural growth throughout the lifespan. Here are some key aspects highlighting the relevance of learning to human development • Learning is the relatively permanent change in behaviour of the individual as a result of experience. • Learning involves far more than thinking: it involves the whole personality - senses, feelings, intuition, beliefs, values and will. • Learning is the mood at which people perceive, think, imagine, reason, judge, analyse or criticise. • It can be noticed in peoples’ attitudes personality traits, systems of value, and the development and organization of the activities that constitute the personality of the individual. • Learning makes the teacher and learners within the school environment get satisfaction and comfort among other factors that could determine the quality of education enjoyed in any school. • Learning should create activities that will foster experiences that should be used in the individual’s behavioural adjustments to society as well as to the entire world. • These activities thus qualify as mental activities, or activities of the mind because they represent instances in which. a teacher has a lot to do and needs to realize to bring about effective teaching Learning could be seen as being central to human development as it empowers individuals to acquire knowledge, develop skills, cultivate relationships, adapt to change, and contribute to society's progress and well-being. Supplied to whom? When, Where, How? • To expose them to the nature of the unique potential each of them carries, and utilise it to solve complex human problems • Learners should be made to realise their leadership role in the quest for knowledge. • They should be provided with relevant information that would create in them the responsibility of becoming good future leaders. • To make learners understand and transform their society. • Develop inquisitive learners, it should be developed in learners, the capacity to inquire into things and search for new ideas and approaches to the problems of life. • To create in learners that each stage of life has its objectives and each serves the overall purpose of making living meaningful.
