risks. According to Heinich et al. (2002), instructional media achieve their
intended learning outcomes only when they are properly selected, managed,
maintained, and utilised within supportive learning environments.
This therefore
raises an important question: Can expensive educational technologies fail
simply because of poor environmental conditions? In many cases, the answer is
yes. For example, a computer laboratory with advanced computers may experience
frequent equipment failure due to excessive heat, unstable electricity, poor
ventilation, or inadequate maintenance practices.

consideration refers to the deliberate planning, organisation, and maintenance
of physical, technological, social, economic, psychological, and ecological
conditions that support the effective management and utilisation of educational

sustainability of instructional resources.
Educational media
management requires more than simply acquiring technological equipment.
Institutions must ensure that appropriate conditions exist to support the
effective operation and longevity of these resources. The Association for
Educational Communications and Technology (AECT) emphasises that successful
learning environments integrate people, processes, technologies, and physical
settings to facilitate meaningful learning experiences (Januszewski &
Molenda, 2008).

Environmental
considerations in educational media management can be grouped into six major
dimensions: physical, technological, psychological, social, economic, and
ecological environments. These dimensions interact to determine the
effectiveness and sustainability of educational media resources.
Physical
Environment
The physical
environment refers to the structural and spatial conditions within which
educational media are stored and used. It includes classroom design, furniture
arrangement, ventilation, lighting, noise control, temperature regulation, and
overall space planning.
Adequate lighting
is essential because it prevents eye strain and improves the visibility of
projected materials and digital displays. Proper ventilation helps to reduce
equipment overheating and improves learners’ concentration during instructional
activities. Comfortable seating arrangements support prolonged learning
activities and encourage interaction among learners. Effective space planning
ensures safe movement, flexible classroom arrangements, and efficient
utilisation of educational resources. Temperature control is also important
because it improves learner comfort and extends the lifespan of electronic
equipment.
Research indicates
that well-designed learning environments contribute positively to student
engagement and academic achievement (Earthman, 2004). Therefore, schools and
institutions must consider physical environmental conditions when establishing
and managing educational media centres.
Technological
Environment
The technological
environment focuses on the availability and reliability of technological
infrastructure required for effective educational media utilisation. Modern
educational media management depends on stable electricity supply, reliable
internet connectivity, computer networks, digital storage systems, cloud
services, cybersecurity measures, and competent technical support personnel.
Without adequate
technological infrastructure, even the most sophisticated instructional
technologies may remain underutilised. For example, an institution may purchase
interactive smart boards and digital learning platforms, but without reliable
electricity, internet access, and technical support, these resources may not
contribute effectively to teaching and learning.
Environmental
Conditions Affecting Media Equipment
Educational media
equipment is sensitive to environmental conditions. Factors such as excessive
heat, high humidity, dust accumulation, water leakage, power fluctuations,
insects, and rodents can negatively affect the performance and durability of
technological resources.
These environmental
hazards may result in equipment malfunction, data loss, shortened equipment
lifespan, and increased repair and replacement costs. For example, a multimedia
laboratory located beneath a leaking roof may experience frequent projector failures

must provide adequate funding for procurement, maintenance, replacement of

Poor budgeting and
inadequate financial planning often result in abandoned media centres where
equipment becomes outdated, damaged, or unusable. Sustainable financial
management is therefore essential for ensuring the continuous operation and
development of educational media facilities.
Ecological (Green)
Environmental Considerations
Modern educational
media management increasingly emphasises environmental sustainability. Green
educational media practices involve the responsible use of technology while
reducing negative environmental impacts.
Strategies for
sustainable media management include the use of energy-efficient devices,
solar-powered ICT laboratories, electronic document management systems,
recycling of electronic waste, responsible procurement practices, and paperless
administration.
Green educational
media management contributes to sustainable development goals, particularly SDG
4 on quality education and SDG 13 on climate action.
Environmental
Safety Measures
Safety is a
critical component of educational media management. Institutions must implement
measures that protect users, equipment, and infrastructure.
Safety practices
include the provision of fire extinguishers, surge protectors, uninterrupted
power supply (UPS) systems, emergency exits, equipment insurance, proper cable
management, security surveillance, and controlled access to media facilities.
These measures reduce institutional risks and promote safe utilisation of
educational technologies.
Environmental

Despite the
importance of environmental management, many institutions face challenges that
limit the effectiveness of educational media centres. Common challenges include
inconsistent electricity supply, poor internet access, insufficient maintenance
culture, inadequate funding, overcrowded classrooms, obsolete technologies,
limited storage facilities, and climate-related deterioration of equipment.
