D-EDT 315-Origin of Open Distance Learning in Ibadan (Nigeria)

Origin of Open Distance Learning in Ibadan (Nigeria)

The origin of Open and Distance Learning in Ibadan, Nigeria, is closely linked to the University of Ibadan (UI), Nigeria’s first university.

In the 1960s, the University of Ibadan introduced correspondence and external degree programmes, particularly for teacher education. These programmes were designed to train teachers who were already working but could not attend full-time university programmes.

Later developments included:

  • The Distance Learning Centre (DLC) at the University of Ibadan
  • Use of printed course materials and periodic face-to-face tutorials
  • Examination conducted under strict university regulations

The University of Ibadan’s ODL initiatives laid the foundation for modern distance education in Nigeria and influenced the establishment of institutions such as the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN).

Characteristics of Open and Distance Learning (ODL)

Open and Distance Learning has unique features that distinguish it from conventional face-to-face education.
