John Dewey described Education as
not a preparation for life, but rather, it is the living. It is a procedure in
which a man lives over a constant renewal of events around him. Education can
be seen as any act or experience that has formative effects on the mind,
character or physical ability of the individual. It could be defined as a
purposive, conscious or unconscious, psychological, sociological, scientific
and philosophical process, which fully brings about the development of the
individual and the maximum development of society in such a way that both enjoy
maximum happiness and prosperity (Teke and Shittu 2022).
No stage of human evolution
requires a unique experience, each experience leads to the transformation of
the mind and the expansion of the brain. For the continuum's sake, each
generation realised the importance of passing the knowledge of evolution to the
younger generation. Therefore, Education is as old as human existence. After
the existence of man on earth, the issue of survival came up, and for man to
survive, he must think. So, when there is a challenge, one must think to find a
way out. For knowledge to be preserved and preserved well, man came up with
different techniques to instil the right values in younger generations.
As education keeps on evolving
daily, each generation always seeks various ways to transform knowledge for the
younger generation in simple ways, especially for easy understanding. This
brought about the involvement of technology to make learning easy. Given this,
there is a need to trace the historical background of educational
technology from global and local perspectives. It is divided into five stages
of human development. These stages include:
· Ancient
Times
· Printing
Press 19th and Early 20th Century
· Mid
to Late 20th Century
· Digital
Revolution
· Mobile
Technology and Social Media
From the ancient time stage, the
history of educational technology spanned through early educational tools
including oral storytelling, clay tablets, and abacuses used in ancient
civilizations like Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, and China.
To explain this better each
generation transferred knowledge through word of mouth, some used images by
pasting them on hard surfaces for instance the Egyptian hieroglyphs
combined logographic and alphabetic symbols on papyrus and wood. Herodotus first
wrote about the abacus in 480 BC. The ancient Egyptians also used it as a
counting mechanism and for trade. The earliest surviving abacus, the Salamis
Tablet, is from around 300 BC and was used by the Greeks. The abacus we
are most familiar with today is the Chinese Suan-pan, which was first
documented in 190 A.D. a device that just about anyone could count on.
The impact of this stage
is these tools facilitated the transmission of knowledge and skills across
generations. It facilitates collaboration among learners and
educators worldwide, though at each local end but could be seen as a stepping stone
that broke down geographical barriers. It prepared students for a
globalized future.
The second stage is
the printing press stage which occurred in the 15th Century. This happened
with the invention brought about by Johannes
Gutenberg. The invention of Gutenberg revolutionised education and widespread
knowledge as this brought out a level of revolution in education by making
books widely available, leading to increased literacy and the spread of
knowledge.
The real impact of this stage is,
that it enabled the dissemination of educational materials, the standardization
of texts, and the birth of formal education systems.
The relevance of this stage is so
germane that it has become integral to education since its
creation. From making it easier to access and spread information by
mass-producing textbooks and other scholarly works, to making diagrams and
other visual materials available, the printing press has proved its importance.
The medium remains the avenue
that brings solid insight into education and mass communication, underlining
the significant impact of the media on the messages they deliver. The advent of
the printing press phenomenon powered a series of emerging trends in
educational technology.
The third stage occurred in
the 19th and Early 20th Centuries, this was the age of Chalkboards and
Textbooks. These became standard tools in classrooms, aiding in the visual
presentation of information and structured learning.
A chalkboard is a hard or rigid
surface composed of a smooth, typically dark material, utilised for writing or
drawing with chalk, particularly in educational settings. This signifies a
revolution in education by enabling teachers to visually present information to
the entire class. It improved teacher-student interactions and offered a
consistent foundation for instruction.

book with wide spaces between the lines. It can be referred to as a book
giving instructions or information. primer. manual. handbook.
text. With the invention of textbooks, the art of printing spread
widely, and other books were produced. It brought about a wider spread of
awareness and knowledge.
Educational Films and Radio
emerged in the early 20th century; this is a documentary film
which is a nonfiction motion picture intended to provide recorded
information on some aspect of real life to people. It covers almost any topic
in different contexts of class subjects and other societal values. Educational
films are produced to teach about related topics, and mostly, they try to
maintain a neutral viewpoint. Television is intended to educate its audience,
especially students or any category of learners. Many teachers use
educational television to encourage student discussion. One of the key benefits
of using film in education is its ability to cater to diverse learning styles.
Educational radio is concerned
with the use of radio transmission as a channel for educational
purposes. It is a form of broadcast that can provide educational content to
listeners, remarkably students and other categories of learners. This is
the era that brought about the production of educational
films and radio programs into the educational system. It allowed for
audio-visual learning experiences and reached broader audiences, including
remote learners.
The immersive experience
by educational films and radio allows students to connect with the
subject matter on a deeper level, making the learning process more meaningful
and memorable.
A good example of an educational
television program is the popular Sesame Streer. They
Provided engaging, educational content to children and adults, promoting
literacy and basic education.
Within this period is the
emergence of computers, computers began to be used in education in
the 1960s and 70s, initially for administrative tasks and later for
instructional purposes. This led to the introduction of computers. This marked
the beginning of computer-assisted instruction (CAI) and the use of educational
software.
Another trend in Educational
Technology emerged in the late 20th to Early 21st Century, this is the digital
revolution whereby the internet and e-learning became the order of the
day. The advent of the internet revolutionized access to information
and learning resources. E-learning platforms emerged, providing online courses
and educational resources. It enabled distance learning, open educational
resources (OER), and Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs).
The current trend is the
Mobile Technology and Social Media era whereby mobile devices and social
media became integral to learning, offering flexibility and interactive
platforms for collaboration. It is Expanding access to education, allowing for
anytime, anywhere learning.

However, the digital revolution also comes with its challenges. It moves so fast that if we’re not intentional about learning, we can be left behind. It’s no longer enough to just know how to use basic tools—we need digital skills to succeed in today’s world.
