Concept of a System Theory.
Definition of Systems Theory
Systems theory is the study of how systems
work. It helps understand how different parts interact and how to improve the
way systems function. The goal is to create general rules that apply to many
types of systems rather than just one specific area.
Systems theory is connected to systems
thinking, machine logic, and engineering, helping us solve problems and
improve how things work.
General Systems Theory (GST) is a conceptual framework
that originated in the mid-20th century and proposes a unified approach to
understanding and explaining the behavior of complex systems across different
disciplines. It was developed by biologist Ludwig von Bertalanffy and has since
been applied in fields such as biology, psychology, sociology, economics,
management, and engineering.
Key elements of General Systems Theory
Holism: Systems are viewed as wholes that are greater than the sum of their
parts. The behavior of a system cannot be fully understood by analyzing its
individual components in isolation; instead, it must be understood in the
context of its interactions and relationships with other parts of the system.
Hierarchy: Systems are often organized hierarchically, with subsystems nested
within larger systems. This hierarchical organization allows for the study of
systems at different levels of complexity, from individual components to entire
ecosystems.
Openness: Systems interact with their environment, exchanging energy, matter,
and information. This interaction with the environment can lead to changes in
the system's structure and behavior over time.
Feedback: Feedback mechanisms play a crucial role in regulating and maintaining
the stability of systems. Feedback loops can be either positive (reinforcing)
or negative (stabilizing), influencing the system's behavior and adaptation to
environmental changes.
Equifinality: Systems can achieve similar outcomes through
different pathways or configurations. This principle acknowledges the
flexibility and adaptability of systems in achieving their goals under varying
conditions.
Emergence: Complex behaviors and properties may emerge from the interactions of
simpler components within a system. These emergent properties are not reducible
to the properties of individual components but arise from the system's
organization and dynamics.
Interdisciplinary Perspective: General Systems Theory provides a
common language and framework for studying and analyzing systems across diverse
disciplines. It encourages interdisciplinary collaboration and the integration

Example of Systems Thinking in Action
Imagine farmers facing crop damage due to
insects. A traditional approach would be to use pesticides to kill the insects.
This may work at first, but in the long run, it can lead to an even bigger
problem. Some insects keep other harmful species under control, so when they
are killed, another species may grow out of control, causing even more damage.
Using systems thinking, a better solution
would be Integrated Pest Management (IPM), which introduces natural
predators to balance the ecosystem rather than relying only on pesticides.

An education system is hierarchical, meaning it is built out of systems within systems. The relationship between a subsystem and a supra system is entirely structural and functional:
The Rule of Nesting: A subsystem is a smaller, operational component inside a system, while a supra system is the larger external environment or governing body that surrounds and influences that system.
For example, if we look at Igando Junior Grammar School as our primary system:
The Subsystem: These are the internal units that keep the school running, such as the Academic Department, the Guidance and Counseling unit, or the School Library. They cannot function in isolation and exist to serve the school.
The Supra System: This is the larger macro-environment that dictates policies and funding to the school, such as the Lagos State Ministry of Education or the Education District.
Every subsystem must align with its system, and every system must adapt to meet the goals of its overarching supra system.
