Objectives
At the end of the lecture
learners should be able to:
- Explain the
concept of education
- Explain the
concept of learning
- State the
relevance of Learning to human development
- Explain the
concept of teaching
- State the
purpose of teaching.
What is Education?
- The word
education is derived from the Latin word “educare” meaning to train or to
mould, and "educere," meaning to lead out.
- To
philosophers, Education means the bringing out of the ideas of universal
validity which are latent in the mind of every man."
- Education
is the capacity to feel pleasure and pain at the right moment.
- Education is
a gradual process which brings positive changes in human life and
behaviour.
In
summary, education is the main thing that encourages us to distinguish between
right and wrong because in the absence of education, we can’t do what we need
or we can’t achieve our goals. Education is a multifaceted concept that
encompasses the process of acquiring knowledge, skills, values, beliefs, and
attitudes through formal instruction, informal learning experiences, and
interactions with one's environment. It is a lifelong journey of intellectual,
personal, and social development that empowers individuals to understand the
world, navigate complex challenges, and realise their potential. It is a dynamic and transformative process that empowers
individuals, enriches communities, and shapes societies. It encompasses formal,
informal, and non-formal learning experiences aimed at achieving specific
learning outcomes and promoting holistic development, socialisation,
citizenship, equity, and inclusion. Education is essential for fostering a
lifelong love of learning, realising human potential, and building a more just,
sustainable, and prosperous world.
Definition
of Learning
• Learning is a biochemical activity in the brain's
information processing, i.e., how the brain converts information to knowledge.
• Learning is a conjecture based on some performance
of the organism resulting in a continuous manifestation of a level of character
transformation that has occurred due to experience.
• Learning is a relatively permanent change in
behavioural potentiality that occurs due to reinforced practice. Education to instruct the
hearts and the minds of children driven by the local community therefore this
calls for social inclusion, especially in an environment where there is extreme
inequality. (Hengehann, 1982,
Mukherjee, 2020).
• In a nutshell, learning is a relatively permanent
change in behaviour due to experience. (Myers, D.G. 1993).
• It involves the ability of learners to remember and
recall information accordingly.
Learning
is a complex and dynamic process through which individuals acquire knowledge,
skills, behaviours, and attitudes, leading to changes in their understanding,
capabilities, and behaviours. It involves active engagement, cognitive
processing, and meaningful interactions with one's environment, experiences,
and social context.
In
Overall, learning is a fundamental aspect of human development and adaptation
that enables individuals to acquire knowledge, skills, and competencies,
navigate their environment, and achieve their full potential. It is a dynamic
and multifaceted process that involves active engagement, meaningful
interaction, construction of knowledge, and adaptation to changing
circumstances. By understanding the concept of learning, educators,
policymakers, and individuals can promote effective learning experiences, foster
lifelong learning attitudes, and support continuous growth and development.
Relevance of Learning to Human
Development
Learning is highly relevant to human development as it plays
a fundamental role in shaping individuals' cognitive, emotional, social, and
behavioural growth throughout the lifespan. Here are some key aspects
highlighting the relevance of learning to human development
• Learning is the relatively permanent change in
behaviour of the individual as a result of experience.
• Learning involves far more than thinking: it
involves the whole personality - senses, feelings, intuition, beliefs, values
and will.
• Learning is the mood at which people perceive,
think, imagine, reason, judge, analyse or criticise.
• It can be noticed in peoples’ attitudes personality
traits, systems of value, and the development and organization of the
activities that constitute the personality of the individual.
• Learning makes the teacher and learners within the
school environment get satisfaction and comfort among other factors that could
determine the quality of education enjoyed in any school.
• Learning should create activities that will foster
experiences that should be used in the individual’s behavioural adjustments to
society as well as to the entire world.
• These activities thus qualify as mental activities,
or activities of the mind because they represent instances in which. a teacher
has a lot to do and needs to realize to bring about effective teaching
Learning could be seen as being central to human development
as it empowers individuals to acquire knowledge, develop skills, cultivate
relationships, adapt to change, and contribute to society's progress and
well-being. By recognizing the relevance of learning to human development,
policymakers, educators, and stakeholders can prioritize investments in
education, promote lifelong learning opportunities, and create supportive
environments that enable individuals to thrive and reach their full potential.
What
is teaching?
Teaching is an act embarked
on to train people, it could be in the form of drills or exercises. It involves
the preparation of a lesson whereby in the process of doing that you think of 3
domains of learning: cognitive, affective and psychomotor. Teaching is the
deliberate and systematic process of facilitating learning by guiding,
instructing, and supporting individuals or groups to acquire knowledge, develop
skills, and achieve learning outcomes. It involves the deliberate design,
organization, and delivery of educational experiences, activities, and
resources to engage learners, promote understanding, and facilitate their
growth and development. Teaching encompasses a wide range of activities,
strategies, and roles that educators undertake to support student learning
effectively. These are some key aspects of teaching effectively.
Content
Delivery:
Teaching involves delivering instructional content, concepts, and information
to learners in a clear, engaging, and accessible manner. Educators use various
methods, techniques, and resources to present information, including lectures,
discussions, demonstrations, multimedia presentations, and hands-on activities.
Instructional
Design:
Teaching requires careful planning and design of learning experiences to
achieve specific learning goals and objectives. Educators design curricula,
lesson plans, and instructional materials that are aligned with learning
objectives, standards, and students' needs and interests. Instructional design
involves selecting appropriate content, sequencing learning activities, and
incorporating diverse instructional strategies to promote meaningful learning
experiences.
Facilitation
of Learning: Teaching involves facilitating learning by creating a supportive
and interactive learning environment that encourages active engagement,
participation, and collaboration among learners. Educators facilitate
discussions, group work, and collaborative activities, provide guidance and
feedback, and promote critical thinking, inquiry, and problem-solving skills.
Assessment
and Feedback: Teaching includes assessing student learning and providing
feedback to guide their progress and achievement. Educators use various
assessment methods, such as quizzes, tests, projects, presentations, and
performance assessments, to evaluate student understanding and mastery of
content. They provide timely and constructive feedback to students to help them
monitor their progress, identify areas for improvement, and make necessary
adjustments to their learning strategies.
Adaptation
and Differentiation: Teaching involves adapting instruction to meet the diverse needs,
interests, and learning styles of individual learners. Educators differentiate
instruction by modifying content, instructional methods, and assessment
strategies to accommodate learners with varying abilities, backgrounds, and
preferences. They provide additional support and resources for struggling
learners and challenge advanced learners to extend their understanding.
Classroom
Management: Teaching requires effective classroom management to create a
positive, safe, and productive learning environment. Educators establish clear
expectations, routines, and procedures, and maintain order and discipline in
the classroom. They foster positive relationships, respect diversity, and
address behavioural issues proactively to maximize learning opportunities for
all students.
Professional Growth and Development: Teaching involves
ongoing professional growth and development to stay informed about new
research, best practices, and developments in education. Educators engage in
reflective practice, seek feedback from peers and mentors, participate in
professional development activities, and continuously refine their teaching
strategies and approaches to improve student learning outcomes.
Generally,
teaching is a complex and dynamic profession that requires expertise,
dedication, and a commitment to fostering student learning and success.
Educators play a critical role in shaping the future by inspiring, empowering,
and equipping learners with the knowledge, skills, and values they need to
thrive in an ever-changing world.
Purpose
of teaching
The purpose
of teaching is multifaceted and encompasses various goals and objectives aimed
at facilitating student learning, growth, and development. Here are some main
purposes of teaching:
• To inspire students to achieve their goals and
become independent, productive members of society.
• It should be realised that teaching is the activity
that leads to improved student achievement.
• To lead students to fulfil ambition and future
success in life.
• To guide learners-Despite all, Teachers are
guidance, - teachers should not forgo their roles as the guide of the learning
process.
• To expose students to an atmosphere for learning.
Provision of required conditions for learning to make learning meaningful,
interesting and pleasurable.
• Exchange of ideas: Another fact is that you should
recognize that you are a learner just as much as your students are.
• To assess the resources required for easy learning.
• To expose them to how they can use the available Technological
gadgets to attain the defined goal.
• To expose learners to orderliness by ensuring that
learning is accomplished based on order.
• To expose learners to flexibility in life,
especially in planning life operations and making beneficial changes to
situations around them.
• To answer the questions: “Who, what, whom, when,
where and how?” i.e. who is going to get what? Supplied to whom? When, Where,
How?
• To expose them to the nature of the unique potential
each of them carries, and utilise it to solve complex human problems
• Learners should be made to realise their leadership
role in the quest for knowledge.
• They should be provided with relevant information
that would create in them the responsibility of becoming good future leaders.
• To make learners understand and transform their
society.
• Develop inquisitive learners, it should be developed
in learners, the capacity to inquire into things and search for new ideas and
approaches to the problems of life.
• To create in learners that each stage of life has
its objectives and each serves the overall purpose of making living meaningful.
In a
nutshell, the purpose of teaching is to empower individuals to become
knowledgeable, skilled, responsible, and ethical members of society who are
prepared to navigate the complexities of the world, contribute positively to
their communities, and pursue their aspirations with confidence and purpose.
